Monochrome with a little bit of Madness! #2

There is no regular Monochrome Madness for the next couple of weeks whilst Leanne is on her tour of the U.S.A. But, I didn’t want to miss my regular Tuesday monochrome posting though so here is a “Not Monochrome Madness” image for this week.

Sometime in the middle of August, we were due an impressive display from the Perseid Meteor Showers. The scene was set, the sky was clear(ish) it was a new moon, so it wasn’t too bright. I got out my camera, tripod, a rug and some hot chocolate all ready to see the “up to 100” meteors each hour. We saw a few, and it was amazing to see them, we couldn’t see as many as it suggested and there were a lot of passing aeroplanes and satellites! I tried to take some shots of them. I had the camera on the tripod at 18mm (APSc) and had set it with the manual controls at f3.5/15sec/ISO1600 to get enough light. My fairly basic camera has an inbuilt intervalometer and I set it to take 40 shots with one shot every 17 seconds. When I had got the shots, I merged them in Photoshop to create these star trails.

At first I was a little disappointed as, although we live a little way out of the city, we clearly aren’t far enough to avoid the light pollution and I tried to reduce the orange glare, but this was the best I could get. I put it on the side for a while, until I saw a picture of star trails in black and white and the penny dropped. If I converted it to monochrome, I would loose the orange glow. So I gave it a go and I’m much happier with the result. The next step is to find a better location to try this again, keep the camera in position for longer than half an hour and maybe get the camera pointing to the North Star to get the concentric circles. Lets put it like this, it hasn’t put me off, yet!

I did get one shot (not great, I admit!) of one of the Perseids, you can just about see it in the top middle of the image. Maybe better luck next August. For some far more impressive photos of the Perseid Meteor Shower, click here.
