One Four Challenge: January Week 1

Robyn G from Captivate Me hosts a monthly feature called One Four Challenge, one image processed four different ways. Each week of the month the participants post a different version of their image and at the end create a poll to see which image was the most popular.

I’ve been watching this challenge from the sidelines, but have now finally taken the plunge and found an image that I can get four edits from, it’s not an easy task!

Week One

This is one that I took in September, the bright red phone box caught my eye. Although considered quite a British icon, there aren’t really that many phone boxes around anymore. Most people have mobiles and of the telephone boxes that are left, not many are these red ones. The original was ok, but nothing special, I felt the colours were quite bland.
For the first edit, I played with the temperature and tint and colour sliders in Lightroom, to get some interesting effects, the one I settled on brought out the green colours whilst retaining the brightness of the contrasting reds.

Here is the original for contrast.

  1. Katie, welcome to the One Four Challenge!
I love your image choice – this could easily be in Windsor NSW AU.
Really like the changes you have made enhancing the greens and changing the red to a warmer red. Looking forward to seeing how your image evolves over the weeks πŸ˜ƒ and hope you have fun with it!! Glad to have you joining us!

  2. Welcome Katie, I love the flags, on the phone booth and in the background and the warm red color is nice too. I am sure you are going to have fun with this image over the next month, looking forward to seeing it evolve.

  3. Hey Katie, glad you came along to play too πŸ™‚ I like your colour process in this weeks one, it feels very british to mee πŸ™‚

  4. well I love the green you brought ou t- looking forward to seeing the other images (and how fun this challenge seems to be – ) and what really struck me about this image was the person standing outside the phone booth. It still is playing in my mind, looking through both panes of phone booth glass to see the girl in a pose that almost would be typical inside the booth – and then your point about the waning away of these icons – well, that fits it as well. Also, the composition – with the group of folks to the back – the rear windows and the greenery – excellent choice for a challenge that works with a pic a few times – have a great week

    1. Thanks Yvette, I see what you mean about her pose and the loss of phone boxes :-). By the way, she was taking a photo with her phone, see, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree! I’m glad you liked the composition, I did put a bit of thought into this, with the bunting leading to the people in the background and the repeating rectangles. Now to make three other images from this, that will be a challenge!! πŸ™‚

  5. I like the overall green tinge in the picture as it feels slightly vintage. My only comment would be that the changes in white balance has muddied the whites on the telephone box resulting in a softer contrast, some selective adjustments could correct that white balance while not effect the balance for the rest of the picture.
